As a general rule, photon-enhanced batteries with PV can provide better performance for low charge voltage and high energy density, which makes themsuitable for smart electronics and optoelectronics. Researchers from the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS) in Japan have reviewed different photo-enhanced rechargeable metal batteries featuring PV and high-energy-density metal batteries for direct solar-to-electrochemical energy storage.
For photo-enhanced rechargeable batteries,light illumination is indispensable,” they explained. Thy introduced the battery technology in “ Photo-enhanced rechargeable high-energy-density metal batteries for solar energy conversion and storage,” which was recently published in Nano Energy.
To actualize an “all-in-one” photo-powered AZIB battery, a photo-powered cathode comprised of MoS 2 @TiO 2 @Ti was developed to facilitate the electron-hole separation at the cathode during the photo-charging process. MoS 2 is a well-known semiconductor and has recently been reported to demonstrate Zn ion storage ability [ 13, 14 ].
To study the electrochemical performance of the photo-powered energy textile under external conditions, two types of weather conditions were evaluated, i.e., sunny and cloudy days. As shown in Fig. 3 f, the photo-powered sweater energy textile was charged by natural solar light (on both sunny and cloudy days).
With the increasing interest in self-monitoring of personal health, the use of photo-powered energy textiles is demonstrated in driving various sensors, e.g., monitoring temperature, humidity, and pulse, in addition to the wireless charging function.
