The calculation results demonstrated a progressive increase in the I S T values of Tunisian cities according to the percentage of EVs (Fig. 6). Indeed, if the percentage of EVs increases, the sustainable transport index value increases. Fig. 6.
This study examines energy transition policies through vehicle electrification. This study focusses on Tunisia as a case study country. The transport sustainability index averaged 0.4 times electrification rate. Transition to EVs shows no effect on the social dimension of sustainability.
Vehicular fleet and roads data According to the Tunisian Transport Technical Agency (ATTT), Tunisia registered 2211369 vehicles in 2018, with an average annual increase of approximately 70,000 to 80,000 vehicles. The energy consumption in the transportation sector comprises 71% diesel, 28% gasoline, and 1% LPG (ANME, 2018).
The Tunisian energy landscape is marked by a contested evolution between the stagnation of natural resources and the sustained increase in demand. During the last two decades, the production of hydrocarbons has fluctuated between 6 and 7 million tons/year (Bettaieb 2018), while primary energy demand has grown at a rate of 3% per year on average.
