This study evaluates future solar energy production in Senegal up to 2050, focusing on eight operational solar plants: Bokhol, Sakal, Malicounda, Kahone, Ten Merina, Mekhe, Ndiass, and Kael.
Senegal´s power sector has been historically reliant on costly fuel imports, with about 80 percent of its energy mix being oil-based. “The Kael and Kahone solar power plants exemplify our commitment to supporting Senegal's transition to cleaner, more affordable energy, while creating business opportunities for local communities.
In Senegal, the country is set to achieve an additional installed capacity of 100 MW of solar, 100 MW of wind, 50 MW of biomass, and 50 MW of Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) by 2030 .
Infinity Power, a joint venture between Egypt's Infinity and UAE's Masdar, has sealed a 20-year capacity change agreement related to a 40-MW/160-MWh battery energy storage systems (BESS) project with Senegal's national electricity company Senelec. Infinity Power will build the battery at the Tobene substation in the city of Thies.
The two plants that launched operations last month are located in Kael and Kahone in Western Senegal and have a total capacity of 60MWac.
This study focuses on eight (8) solar plants, mainly located in western Senegal (Bokhol, Sakal, Malicounda, Kahone, Ten Merina, Mekhe, Ndiass, and Kael), with particular emphasis on Ten Merina, where the observation data used were collected. Ten Merina is located in the department of Tivaoune, the region of Thies (the second most populated region).
