Insufficient access to comprehensive and current data on energy infrastructure, policies, and practices in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) may hinder the depth and accuracy of the analysis. This could lead to potential gaps in understanding the state of regional integrated energy systems (RIES) in the region.
The Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen), has been designated to be the Implementing Agency for the Kenyan Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), which is part of the Kenya Green and Resilient Expansion of Energy (GREEN) program, funded by the World Bank.
Notable examples include Kenya's Lake Turkana Wind Power Project, South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP), and off-grid solar solutions. Despite these positive developments, low energy access is still a prevailing and significant challenge in SSA.

Regional integrated energy systems can enhance energy security by diversifying energy sources, fostering economic development, and stimulating cross-border energy trade.
