Architects and engineers have developed ways to use PV modules in building facades substituting them for regular building materials, hence reducing the net cost of the PV generated energy. The approach is known as building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) architecture. Inverters are used to transform DC current into AC currents.
A photovoltaic (PV) system is able to supply electric energy to a given load by directly converting solar energy through the photovoltaic effect. The system structure is very flexible. PV modules are the main building blocks; these can be arranged into arrays to increase electric energy production.
The photovoltaic effect is the basic physical process through which a PV cell converts sunlight into electricity. Sunlight is composed of photons (like energy accumulations), or particles of solar energy. These photons contain various amounts of energy corresponding to the different wavelengths of the solar spectrum.
The objective of this paper is to introduce the integration of the diverse factors that affect the performance of Photovoltaic panels and how those factors affect the performance of the system. Those factors include: environmental, PV system, installation, cost factors as well as other miscellaneous factors.
Photovoltaic energy sources can be used as stand-alone systems and grid-connected systems and their applications include water pumping, battery charging, home power supplies, street lighting, refrigeration, swimming-pool heating systems, hybrid vehicles, telecommunications, military space and satellite power systems, and hydrogen production.
