A battery energy storage system (BESS) is an electrochemical device that charges (or collects energy) from the grid or a power plant and then discharges that energy at a later time to provide electricity or other grid services when needed.

All of its energy storage units will use Tesla's Megapack electrochemical energy storage system produced at the Shanghai Megafactory. The electricity generated by the photovoltaic system will be directly supplied to the Megafactory, with excess power automatically stored in the Megapack for future use.

Indeed, suboptimal designs of this kind of process unit (the average installation costs for battery energy storage systems, although continuously decreasing, now stand at about 300–350 USD/kWh [10, 12]) would lead to as severe as avoidable surges in the production cost of the resulting green chemicals.

Conversely, electrical energy storage generally requires a battery energy storage system (BESS) . Specifically, utility-scale battery systems typically show storage capacities ranging from a few to hundreds of megawatt-hours.

For example, a battery with 1 MW of power capacity and 4 MWh of usable energy capacity will have a storage duration of four hours. Cycle life/lifetime is the amount of time or cycles a battery storage system can provide regular charging and discharging before failure or significant degradation.

The Shanghai facility will primarily produce Megapack, Tesla's utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS). Each Megapack unit weighs 38 tons and can store over 3.9 MWh of energy, sufficient to power approximately 3,600 households for one hour.
