Norway mobile generator power station

Vamma power station is Norway's largest run-of-river hydropower station and Hafslund's largest power station. In total, the power station takes in water from an area the size of Switzerland. In 2015, it was 100 years since the first two generators were commissioned and the power station has subsequently been developed in multiple stages.

Hydropower is still the mainstay of the Norwegian electricity system. At the beginning of 2023, there were 1 769 hydropower plants in Norway, with a combined installed capacity of 33 691 MW. In a normal year, the Norwegian hydropower plants produce 136.49 TWh, which is about 88% of Norway's total power production.

Many power plants in Norway have storage reservoirs and production can therefore be adjusted within the constraints set by the licence and the watercourse itself. Wind and solar power are intermittent; electricity can only be generated when the energy is available.

Some small hydropower plants make use of the head of water between reservoirs. More than 75 % of Norway's production capacity is flexible. By using storage reservoirs, flexible hydropower plants can produce electricity even in periods when there is little precipitation and inflow is low.

There is a limited num-ber of pumped-storage power stations in Norway. The pump-ing capacity is roughly 1.5 GW. The existing pumping sta-tions were built for seasonal operation (i.e., storage when the snow is melting as well as during spring floods and heavy raining periods, with production during peak load situations and the winter).

Kvilldal power plant in Suldal Municipality in Rogaland County is the largest in Norway in terms of installed capacity. The plant is equipped with four Francis turbines.
