Various electrolytes, from aqueous to ionic liquid, have been studied and implemented as potential electrolytes for supercapacitors.
One among the electrolytes that is utilised for electrochemical supercapacitors is aqueous electrolyte, but due to the limited voltage window, there are not many commercial electrochemical products available.
In Fig. 17, the conventional supercapacitor electrolytes are compared including aqueous KOH, an organic solvent with LiPF6 salt, and an ionic liquid (IL). It is noticeable that the energy densities of these electrolytes vary significantly, with the EMI-BF 4 IL electrolyte having an energy density of a higher magnitude than aqueous KOH.
In addition, the notified study exhibited a high energy density of 33.1 Wh/kg @0.25 A/g and a power density of 3195 W/kg @4 A/g for flexible asymmetric supercapacitors . It demonstrated that KOH is an appropriate electrolyte for the EDLC and pseudocapacitive type electrodes.

As a result, supercapacitors are used in a variety of commercial applications such as emergency backup powers, consumer electronics, and hybrid vehicles.
Electrochemical supercapacitors stand out with their superior capacitance density, surpassing traditional electrolytic capacitors by at least two orders of magnitude. However, the intrinsic slow ion dynamics of electrical double layer effects greatly limit supercapacitors characteristic frequency, constraining their applicability in microsystems.
