This work focuses on PV-EC and PV-PEC CO 2 RR systems and their components and then summarizes the special cell configurations, including the tandem and stacked structures.
The photovoltaic sector is now led by silicon solar cells because of their well-established technology and relatively high efficiency. Currently, industrially made silicon solar modules have an efficiency between 16% and 22% (Anon (2023b)).
This review highlights the latest progress in terms of active material design, interface material development, device technology, and various proposed strategies aimed at achieving power conversion efficiencies above 19%. Finally, we propose future research directions to achieve high-efficiency organic solar cells.
They highlight that the upcoming generation of solar cells has achieved an efficiency of 26.1%, indicating potential for even higher efficiency rates. Nonetheless, they emphasize the necessity for more targeted research to not only normalize this level of efficiency but also to exceed it.
Solar cell with emerging or novel materials Emerging solar cell technologies include novel methods, materials, and techniques in various phases of development, from early-stage research to near-commercialization. Their objective is to improve the efficiency, affordability, and adaptability of solar cells.
The prospects of various solar cell technologies are promising but differ in focus. Silicon-based solar cells continue to evolve, with prospects for improved efficiency and cost reduction through advanced materials and manufacturing techniques.
Over time, various types of solar cells have been built, each with unique materials and mechanisms. Silicon is predominantly used in the production of monocrystalline and polycrystalline solar cells (Anon, 2023a). The photovoltaic sector is now led by silicon solar cells because of their well-established technology and relatively high efficiency.
