2.1. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) Electrochemical methods, primarily using batteries and capacitors, can store electrical energy. Batteries are considered to be well-established energy storage technologies that include notable characteristics such as high energy densities and elevated voltages .
According to the U.S. Department of Energy's 2019 Energy Storage Technology and Cost Characterization Report, for a 4-hour energy storage system, lithium-ion batteries are the best option when you consider cost, performance, calendar and cycle life, and technology maturity.

In this Review, we describe BESTs being developed for grid-scale energy storage, including high-energy, aqueous, redox flow, high-temperature and gas batteries. Battery technologies support various power system services, including providing grid support services and preventing curtailment.
