This article offers a detailed analysis of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. It examines the distinct qualities and developments of the three generations of solar PV technologies: first-generation crystalline silicon, second-generation thin-film, and third-generation developing technologies, including perovskite and organic cells.
The global capacity of solar PV generation has nearly tripled over the last half decade, increasing from 304.3 GW in 2016 to 760.4 GW in 2020 (11, 12). Solar power has been the fastest growing power source globally, comprising 50% of global investment in renewable energy from 2010 to 2019 and ranking first in net added generation capacity (13).
Accelerating energy transition towards renewables is central to net-zero emissions. However, building a global power system dominated by solar and wind energy presents immense challenges. Here, we demonstrate the potential of a globally interconnected solar-wind system to meet future electricity demands.
With the increasing demand for renewable energy sources, distributed systems are poised to play a vital role in the future of solar PV deployment. Overall, solar PV capacity additions have continued to grow globally (52%), with a shift towards distributed PV systems in 2022.
The heat is subsequently transferred to the HTF, which, in turn, is used to generate electricity, when it reaches a particular temperature, activates the steam generating system.
