Dear Colleagues, The penetration of non-synchronous generation and storage is one of the topics that cannot be avoided when dealing with the transmission and distribution systems today. Shares of solar power generation, variable speed generation, and battery storage are continuously increasing compared to synchronous generation.
However, non-synchronous generation and storage units are all connected to the network through power electronic converters. Consequently, different control strategies and smart solutions can be applied to enhance system stability. This Special Issue focuses on, but is not limited to, the following topics:
Shares of solar power generation, variable speed generation, and battery storage are continuously increasing compared to synchronous generation. Consequently, non-synchronous generation and storage, not only affect normal system operation but also change the long- and short-term stability of the entire system.
As levels of non-synchronous energy generation increase and synchronous generators continue to retire, system inertia levels are expected to fall. This might introduce a level of vulnerability to failure that could make the grid inoperable, especially as renewable energy penetrations pass 80% of annual energy demand and approach 100%.
Most non-synchronous generators fed into the grid are connected using DC-based inverter equipment . An increase in inverter-based renewable energy reduces the number of operational synchronous generators, thus decreasing the system's inertia, according to (2).
However, a battery energy storage system connected to a renewables plant would be considered dispatchable because the stored electricity can be released on demand. Most hydroelectric generators are dispatchable, but it's important to note that some aren't.
