Large sulfate crystals can form in the lower section of the electrodes under deep discharging or low rate charging conditions of the battery in the operation cycles of a PV system.
Purpose: This recommended practice is meant to assist lead-acid battery users to properly store, install, and maintain lead-acid batteries used in residential, commercial, and industrial photovoltaic systems.
Characteristic of the open (or vented) lead acid battery is that the small amounts of hydrogen and oxygen produced at the electrodes during battery operation can be vented to the atmosphere through small holes at the top of the battery.
