The world's biggest vanadium flow battery has been successfully connected to the grid in China by Dalian Rongke Energy Storage Technology Development— following six years of planning, construction, and commissioning.
Previously, the biggest flow battery installation in the world was a 15MW/60MWh system deployed in 2015 in northern Japan by Sumitomo Electric.
The 100MW/400MWh Redox Flow Battery Storage Demonstration Project was connected to the 220kV Chunan Line and Chuwan Line in Dalian on 24 May. The capacity of the first-phase project cost about 1.9 billion yuan ($280 million) or 4.75 yuan/Wh ($0,75).
New energy storage, or energy storage using new technologies, such as lithium-ion batteries, liquid flow batteries, compressed air and mechanical energy, will become an important foundation for building a new power system in China, Lin said.
