The Netherlands leads the EU in per-capita solar PV capacity, having added around three gigawatts annually over the past three years. This remarkable growth highlights the country's commitment to renewable energy, despite facing notable challenges, especially in balancing solar development with the protection and use of agricultural land.
With 279 charge points per 100,000 inhabitants, the Netherlands has the third densest charging network in Europe. And its rate of 29% residential solar PV installations among eligible single-family homes is the second-highest in Europe. But assets alone are not enough, meaning there is still room for improvement.
We explore two scenarios for a near climate-neutral energy system in the Netherlands. With the OPERA model we determine their technology, sector and cost implications. The electricity share in primary energy increases from 19% today to 41–71% in 2050. Hydrogen becomes another important energy carrier, notably in transport and industry.
The available potential for wind and solar energy enables the Netherlands to supply electricity to adjacent electricity markets. In both scenarios, the potential for onshore and offshore wind is fully used, but the potential for solar power is not fully exploited.
