This also shows two distinct sets of data and that is fundamentally down to the two dominant chemistries currently being used, LFP and NMC/NCA.
The operating voltage of the pack is fundamentally determined by the cell chemistry and the number of cells joined in series. If there is a requirement to deliver a minimum battery pack capacity (eg Electric Vehicle) then you need to understand the variability in cell capacity and how that impacts pack configuration.
Increasing or decreasing the number of cells in parallel changes the total energy by 96 x 3.6V x 50Ah = 17,280Wh. As the pack size increases the rate at which it will be charged and discharged will increase. In order to manage and limit the maximum current the battery pack voltage will increase.
When sizing a battery pack one of the first things to look at is the number of cells in series and pack voltage. Pack Nominal Voltage = Cell Nominal Voltage x Number of Cells in Series When connecting cells in series the negative terminal of the first cell is connected to the positive terminal of the second cell.
We also need to consider the maximum and minimum pack voltage. The maximum to minimum voltage swing increases as we increase the number of cells in series. The maximum voltage is important as the charging system requirements need to be checked to ensure it can charge the pack to the correct State of Charge (SOC).
