During charging, electrical energy is converted into chemical energy and stored within the battery.
The other primary element of a BESS is an energy management system (EMS) to coordinate the control and operation of all components in the system. For a battery energy storage system to be intelligently designed, both power in megawatt (MW) or kilowatt (kW) and energy in megawatt-hour (MWh) or kilowatt-hour (kWh) ratings need to be specified.
The components of a battery energy storage system generally include a battery system, power conversion system or inverter, battery management system, environmental controls, a controller and safety equipment such as fire suppression, sensors and alarms. For several reasons, battery storage is vital in the energy mix.
