Nowadays, separators have new important requirements; for example, separators for electric vehicles or energy storage stations need high thermal and mechanical stability, together with a high electrolyte wettability . Li-ion batteries experience critical issues when operated at extreme temperatures.
This phenomenon is called separator breakdown, which is one step of the Li-ion battery thermal runaway process. Therefore, the thermal properties of separators have a strong influence on battery safety. Numerical studies in this field can provide a better understanding of the separator breakdown mechanism and give reliable prediction results.
In fact, mechanical, thermal and electrochemical effects occurring in the lithium-ion cell have an ongoing impact on the separator. The separator structure, its chemical composition and the electrolyte composition all impact how a separator will respond to the dynamic processes occurring in a cell.

Although the separator, which is placed between the anode and the cathode, is not directly involved in electrochemical reactions, its structure and its properties play an important role in cell performance.
