This paper addresses the problem of distributed energy management in multi-area integrated energy systems (MA-IES) using a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning approach. The MA-IES consists of interconnected electric and thermal networks, incorporating renewable energy sources and heat conversion systems.
Distributed energy resources (DERs) are proliferating on power systems, offering utilities new means of supporting objectives related to distribution grid operations, end-customer value, and market participation.
Introduction Energy Storage System (ESS) integration into grid modernization (GM) is challenging; it is crucial to creating a sustainable energy future . The intermittent and variable nature of renewable energy sources like wind and solar is a major problem.
We propose a distributed energy management strategy that makes hierarchical decisions on intra-area heat energy and inter-area electric energy. The strategy is based on a multi-agent deep reinforcement learning framework, where each agent represents a component or unit in the MA-IES.
This study evaluates the integrated systems' potential to provide a reliable energy supply in the face of adversity, such as severe weather or malfunctioning equipment. It entails analyzing how well ESS copes with grid disturbances and how it helps to restore the grid to a constant flow of electricity.
As a result, the idea of DG arose, in which several tiny, largely renewable power-producing sources termed distributed energy resources (DERs) are connected to the grid and produce electricity where needed most, at or near the load centers.
