The storing of electricity typically occurs in chemical (e.g., lead acid batteries or lithium-ion batteries, to name just two of the best known) or mechanical means (e.g., pumped hydro storage).
Power electronics-based energy storage devices are among the fastest growing technologies for solving power quality problems, providing ancillary services, and supporting the development and access to affordable clean energy for a wide range of segments and applications.
Vanadium flow batteries that store electricity in liquid electrolyte tanks may be more suitable for large-scale energy storage projects. Other battery technologies include lead-acid, sodium sulfur, and metal air batteries, all of which could play a role in the green energy transition. Not all energy storage solutions require batteries.
From 11 am to 1 pm, the demand is high, but the power from sunlight starts to decline. Therefore, the storage device switches to the discharge mode and compensates the low performance of the solar plant. Indeed, the energy storage device can help smooth the variability and the mismatch between the solar power generation and the energy demand.
