Lithium titanate energy storage price

Among the alternative active materials, lithium titanate oxide (LTO) has already been commercialized. The drawback is that lithium -ion batteries with lithium titanate oxide tend to have a lower energy density. Moreover, they are associated with safety issues.

An international research team from Tsinghua University, MIT and Argonne National Laboratory has discovered a series of novel lithium titanate hydrates that show better electrochemical performances compared to all the Li 2 O–TiO 2 materials reported so far—including those after nanostructuring, doping and/or coating.

Thanks to the higher lithium-ion diffusion coefficient in lithium titanate compared to traditional carbon anode materials, LTO batteries can be charged and discharged at high rates. This not only drastically reduces charging time—often to just about ten minutes—but also has minimal impact on the cycle life and thermal stability of the battery.

Generally, LTO batteries are on the pricier side, with costs driven up by high production expenses and stringent humidity control requirements. The average cost of LTO battery cells is about $1.5 USD per watt-hour, while comparable lithium iron phosphate and ternary lithium battery cells are priced at roughly $0.4 USD per watt-hour.

China produces an estimated 80% of the entire world's lithium-ion batteries each year, and about 60% of all electric vehicle batteries. As a result, Chinese prices for battery-grade lithium (i.e. lithium carbonate with over 99.5% purity) have become one of the foremost proxies for the price performance of lithium as a commodity.
