Pakistan, being primarily an agricultural country and rich in livestock, has huge potential for power generation by means of biogas. The assessed potential of biogas generation is found to be 8.8 to 17.2 billion m³ (around 55 to 106 TWh of energy, equal to Pakistan's overall power requirements recently).
Pakistan has significant hydropower potential of about 51,700 MW, which includes large Hydro sources from PPIB and MoW&P. Additionally, Pakistan is rich in solar energy due to the large amount of solar radiation it receives.
To meet the energy needs of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), around $33 billion of the $37 billion assigned for energy projects will be utilized for 21 identified projects. Sindh will receive the largest investment of $11.3 billion in Pakistan's power development structure.
Pakistan's power potential includes: more than 300,000 MW from wind and about 51,700 MW from hydropower. This much renewable energy can be effectively employed to increase electricity generation and meet the demand.
A severe energy crisis is currently affecting Pakistan's 220 million population and various investors. The global trend is to switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy for a healthier environment. This paper provides an analysis of the already existing renewable energy sources in Pakistan, which may contribute to addressing the energy crisis.
