Depending on how energy is stored, storage technologies can be broadly divided into the following three categories: thermal, electrical and hydrogen (ammonia). The electrical category is further divided into electrochemical, mechanical and electromagnetic (Figure 2).
Energy storage technology allows for a flexible grid with enhanced reliability and power quality. Due to the rising demand for energy storage, propelled further by the need for renewable energy supply at peak times, energy storage facilities and producers have grown tremendously in recent years.
According to a survey by the China Electricity Council, new energy distribution and storage projects have a low equivalent utilisation co-efficient of 6.1%, the lowest among the application scenarios, while the average for electrochemical energy storage projects is 12.2% (Figure 8).
It was billed as Europe's largest battery storage project when it became operational at the end of 2014 and was revolutionary thanks to its technology providing a range of benefits to the wider electricity system, including absorbing energy then releasing it to meet demand. 6.
