One significant factor that has driven the expansion in solar capacity is its growing efficiency. Efficiency of PV panels was just 6% when PVs first reached the market in the mid 1950s. Today's PVs are up to 24.5% efficient, with recent advances in technology indicating that figure could rise above 30% later this decade.
Solar photovoltaics (PV) is a mature technology ready to contribute to this challenge. Throughout the last decade, a higher capacity of solar PV was installed globally than any other power-generation technology and cumulative capacity at the end of 2019 accounted for more than 600 GW.
This highlights the large potential for solar PV expansion. Adequate policies are needed to ensure that high installation rates are maintained in the short term and that the potential environmental, social, and economic benefits of solar PV are effectively materialized.
Keeping a 50% annual growth for 9 additional years would mean producing ~34,000 TWh (more than the global electricity demand in 2019, which accounted for ~27,000TWh 2). This highlights the large potential for solar PV expansion.
