The findings highlight a crucial energy transition point, not only for China but for other countries, at which combined solar power and storage systems become a cheaper alternative to coal-fired electricity and a more grid-compatible option. The cost advantage of solar PV allows for coupling with storage to generate cost-competitive and grid-compatible electricity. The combined systems potentially could supply 7.2 PWh of grid-compatible electricity in 2060 to meet 43.2% of the country's electricity demand at a price below 2.5 US cents/kWh.
The decline in costs for solar power and storage systems offers opportunity for solar-plus-storage systems to serve as a cost-competitive source for the future energy system in China. The transportation, building, and industry sectors account, respectively, for 15.3, 18.3, and 66.3% of final energy consumption in China (5).
This is where energy storage systems come into play. Large batteries can store energy when production is high and release it when demand soars, ensuring a consistent power supply. Innovations like lithium-ion batteries and pumped hydro storage are proving critical in balancing the supply and demand of renewable energy.
On the grid side, specialized energy storage power stations will replace traditional thermal power plants to provide peak and frequency regulation functions and ensure the safety of the power grid operation.
An increasing number of countries have realized the potential of this abundant energy source. In fact, solar installations are seeing record growth globally, with continuous breakthroughs making solar panels more efficient and cost-effective.
