Share of ASEAN electricity supply from solar and wind in 2021. ASEAN electricity supply from solar and wind in 2030, according to latest national plans. Among 10 ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states, five countries dominate the region's total electricity generation (covering 89% generation).
In their remarks, they pointed out that only fractions of wind potential are currently being explored in ASEAN, with data from 2020 showing the number of installed wind capacity in that year only accounted for 2.7 GW, despite the overwhelming 1,000 GW wind potential capacity. There are three main topics discussed in this workshop.
According to the flagship publication, AEO7, there will be a steady increase of installed wind capacity in ASEAN to 4 GW in 2025 and 7 GW in 2050 from the latest data in 2020. By this rate, continuing national efforts would lead to 37.9% of renewable energy in installed capacity and 41.5% share in the higher ambitious scenario in 2025.
Accessible entry and well-built roads are basic requirements for the construction of large-scale wind power bases, but are not commonly available in many parts of rural ASEAN. These include difficult-to-access central Indonesia and the sprawling archipelago of the Philippines.
However, solar and wind generated only 4% of ASEAN 5's electricity last year, lagging behind its peers like China (11%) and India (8%). Analysis of current power sector development plans show the total share of solar and wind in ASEAN 5 will rise from 4% of electricity in supply in 2021 to 11% by 2030.
He mentioned that the World Bank Group is currently providing technical assistance for offshore wind in the two most potential countries for the technology, Vietnam and the Philippines.
